Out-migration for Work and Tuberculosis Disease in Rural Henan, China

چکیده
China’s internal migration is estimated at >120 million; farmers make up 70% of them. There are 4.5 million Chinese suffering from TB, cause of highest number of death from infectious diseases. We ask “Is out-migration for work a risk factor of TB?” In 2002-04 we studied 160 new TB cases and 320 controls in rural Henan. Results of statistical analyses confirm that work migration is a significant factor. Poverty had driven farmers into exploitative work outside their villages. Treatment and opportunity costs were a catastrophe for many when they fell sick from work with TB. a School of Economics, University of Queensland, St Lucia, Brisbane 4072 (Tel: 07 3365 6609) Email: [email protected] b National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health, Australian National University, Canberra Wang Guo-Jie and Liu Xi-Li are from the Henan Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Zhengzhou, Henan Province, PR China OUT-MIGRATION FOR WORK AND TUBERCULOSIS DISEASE IN RURAL HENAN, CHINA

OBJECTIVE To investigate the economic effects of illness on individual tuberculosis (TB) cases in rural China and to use a case-control study to show a strong TB-poverty link. SETTING In 2002-2004 we studied 160 new smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) cases and 320 age- and sex-matched controls living in neighbouring houses in four rural counties of Henan Province. Avian Pasteurella multocida is the causative agent of fowl cholera, a disease much affecting the poultry industry. In order to study the efficacy of the recombinant subunit vaccine constructed with ptfA gene of avian P. multocida, the ptfA gene fragment amplified by PCR from avian P. multocida was cloned into the prokaryotic expression vector pET32a and the recombinant plasmid pET32a-ptfA was o...
